Peaches

$8200.00

Bronze sculpture Peaches by Kim Seyesnem Obrzut. Her hair is worn in the traditional Hopi Whorl, the hairstyle of a maiden available for marriage. She holds a basket of peaches — a display of her hard work and contribution to her village. The Spanish introduced peaches to the Hopi mesas in the sixteenth century. In good years the fruit is plentiful, and extra peaches are dried for later use or traded. Each peach tree is customarily allotted to a little girl whose duty is to care for it. On the back of her shawl rests a Hopi design of lightning, clouds and rain — her prayer for the tree. Her faceless form represents a people, not an individual: One Mind, one Body, one Spirit. About the piece Subject: a Hopi maiden bearing a basket of peaches Medium: hand-cast bronze, 23" H x 10" W x 10" D Story: Hopi Whorl hairstyle, peach harvest, rain and cloud prayers A collector-quality original by Kim Seyesnem Obrzut
